The good news: the The 2011 IT Salary Guide demonstrates that IT salary levels are once again headed upward.
The 2011 IT Salary Guide indicates some respectable boosts in average salary. Lead applications developers get a 4.7% increase and software engineers enjoy a 4.1% boost in paycheck. Okay, so IT managers move up a ho-hum 2.5% and project managers rise 2.8%, but Web developers jump 4.6% and System Security Admins levitate a healthy 4% (seems like security is always hot).
The bad news: these rising IT salary numbers are merely compensating for last year’s 2-4% decreases. So alas, the net effect is that IT salaries are essentially flat over the last year or so. Yes, times are tough.
Still, IT remains one of the better-paid fields, and a multi-year look at the salary numbers bears this out. Between 2007 and 2008 – the tail end of the boom years – IT salaries rose an impressive 5.3%. And between 2008 and 2009, before the downturn squeezed IT, paychecks trended upward 3.7%.

D.There is no gender gap for IT...Information Technology (IT) projects related to collaboration, security and cloud computing are driving job prospects for Canadian technology professionals, according to a recent survey of Canadian business decision-makers commissioned by Sapphire and IBM. Almost half of the survey respondents now foresee an increased need for IT personnel in the near and long-term, much more favourable than in 2009. In addition, almost 50 per cent of those surveyed plan to grow their current staffing levels this quarter, while only 7 per cent expect to decrease.The trend is 

"The results from the survey show employers are investing more in their workforce and are slowly taking off their ‘recession blinders'," said Sergio Mateus, President, Sapphire Canada. "Our outlook is very positive for those looking for work in the IT sector. IT has traditionally been one of the first industries to bounce back after a recession, and these results suggest demand for IT professionals is on the rise again."

In 2011, 95 per cent of respondents plan to either maintain or increase current staffing levels, with the vast majority of these resources needed for projects related to collaboration (44 per cent), security (25 per cent) and cloud computing (18 per cent).

"As the technologies converge, skills in collaboration, security and cloud are much in demand. Companies want to be on the cloud for the benefits but need to develop their strategy and understand the impact on their overall skills and resourcing," said Bob Wylie, vice-president of Datacentre, Workplace and Enterprise Services at IBM. "Finding skilled IT people for emerging technologies can be challenging and companies should be prepared to look at creative approaches to filling the gap."

Normalization

Normalization is the process of designing a data model to efficiently store data in a database. The end result is that redundant data is eliminated, and only data related to the attribute is stored within the table.
For example, let's say we store City, State and ZipCode data for Customers in the same table as Other Customer data. With this approach, we keep repeating the City, State and ZipCode data for all Customers in the same area. Instead of storing the same data again and again, we could normalize the data and create a related table called City. The "City" table could then store City, State and ZipCode along with IDs that relate back to the Customer table, and we can eliminate those three columns from the Customer table and add the new ID column.
Normalization rules have been broken down into several forms. People often refer to the third normal form (3NF) when talking about database design. This is what most database designers try to achieve: In the conceptual stages, data is segmented and normalized as much as possible, but for practical purposes those segments are changed during the evolution of the data model. Various normal forms may be introduced for different parts of the data model to handle the unique situations you may face.
Whether you have heard about normalization or not, your database most likely follows some of the rules, unless all of your data is stored in one giant table. We will take a look at the first three normal forms and the rules for determining the different forms here.
